Document legalisation for use abroad
A Mongolian document is only valid in another country once it carries the right certification. Depending on the destination, that is an apostille or a full chain of legalisation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and an embassy. We find the correct route and take care of every step.
Apostille or legalisation?
Mongolia is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. For the many countries that also apply it — including China, Russia, South Korea, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom — a single apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia is enough.
Countries that are not parties, and the few parties that objected to Mongolia's accession (Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany and Greece), require the traditional route: notarisation, certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then consular or embassy legalisation.
Use the country checker below or browse requirements by country.
Documents from abroad for use in Mongolia
The same rules apply in reverse. A foreign document needs an apostille from its country of origin, or consular legalisation by the Mongolian embassy there, and then a certified Mongolian translation. We tell you exactly what to obtain abroad and translate the document once it arrives.
Where will your document be used?
Choose the destination country to see whether you need an apostille or full legalisation.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which route my document needs?
It depends on the destination country and sometimes on the authority there. Tell us where the document will be used and we will confirm the route before you pay anything.
Should the translation be done before or after the apostille?
It varies. Some authorities want the original apostilled and then translated together with the apostille; others want the translation itself certified. We follow what your receiving authority requires.
Can you legalise documents issued outside Ulaanbaatar?
Yes. Documents issued anywhere in Mongolia can be legalised. Ministry and embassy steps take place in Ulaanbaatar, and we handle them for you.
