Mongolian documents for use in China

What your documents need before China will accept them — and how we get them there.

Apostille

Mongolia and China both apply the Hague Apostille Convention. A Mongolian public document only needs an apostille — no embassy legalisation.

China joined the Apostille Convention on 7 November 2023, so Mongolian documents no longer need legalisation at the Chinese embassy. Translations into simplified Chinese are the norm for mainland authorities.

The route your document takes

  1. Certified copy or translation, if required
  2. Apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia
  3. Translation into Chinese (in Mongolia or by a sworn translator abroad)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an apostille and legalisation?

An apostille is a single certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, valid in countries that apply the Hague Apostille Convention with Mongolia. Legalisation is a chain of certifications — notary, ministry and embassy — used for all other countries.

Which countries do not accept a Mongolian apostille?

Countries that are not parties to the Convention (for example the United Arab Emirates and Qatar), and Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany and Greece, which objected to Mongolia's accession. See requirements by country.

How long does it take?

Simple personal documents are usually translated in 1–3 business days. Apostille and legalisation add time depending on the ministry and the embassy. Your quote includes a firm timeline.

Can you help if I live abroad?

Yes. We obtain documents in Mongolia on your behalf, translate and legalise them, and send them to you anywhere in the world.
